Based on an actual outdoor tests conducted over a 10-year period it was proven that durability of a safety helmet is largely influenced by the material. The statement that durability of safety helmets of duroplastic materials will only be limited due to mechanical damage, has been proven wrong. Safety helmets manufactured among others of UV-stabilised polyethylene should therefore be replaced after four years, those of phenolic resin fabric after eight years and safety helmets of glass fibre reinforced polyester or polycarbonate after ten years (maximum time span).
VOSS helmets of polyethylene have fulfilled the artificial ageing as per Appendix B of EN 397, and after up to five years are still complying with the required standards.
This is proof of the high quality of our safety helmets. However, after a hard crack the safety helmet may no longer be used.
